Anna Sakhno-Murphy is a doctor of physical therapy who holds the pelvic floor rehabilitation practitioner certification, specializing in pelvic health therapy. In 2010, Dr. Sakhno-Murphy earned a clinical doctorate degree in PT from Stony Brook University. She began her career at Southampton Hospital, working across the continuum of care, including in-patient and out-patient departments, treating adult patients with a variety of orthopedic, neurological, and post-surgical diagnoses. In 2016, Dr. Sakhno began intensive study of pelvic floor rehab through the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute, allowing her to work with patients facing various conditions such as urinary and fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic and low back pain, post-partum recovery, and menopause transition. Dr. Sakhno earned the Pelvic Rehabilitation Practitioner Certification (PRPC), distinguishing her as an expert in pelvic rehabilitation and women's health therapy. In 2024, she opened a private pelvic floor rehab practice on the East End of Long Island, in her hometown of Riverhead, NY. Dr. Sakhno provides a comfortable and professional environment for her patients, addressing their pelvic health therapy needs as part of their overall musculoskeletal system. She maintains an open relationship with her patients' referring physicians and regularly communicates with them regarding their patients' PT progress. Dr. Sakhno ensures that each patient is instructed in a comprehensive home exercise program tailored to their current condition to prevent the recurrence of symptoms and promote their general wellness.

At the initial evaluation, Dr. Sakhno gathers a detailed patient history and conducts an examination that includes a postural and biomechanics assessment, range of motion, muscle strength and flexibility testing, as well as an external and/or internal pelvic floor muscle exam. This pelvic floor muscle assessment is crucial in pelvic health therapy, providing important insights into muscle tone and coordination, soft tissue extensibility, muscle strength, and endurance. These findings are essential for developing a customized comprehensive plan of care. As an expert in women's health therapy, Dr. Sakhno is skilled in diagnosing and treating a variety of pelvic floor conditions related to incontinence, constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic and low back pain, and postpartum recovery.
In addition to exercise instruction, patients receive education on pelvic anatomy and function as part of their physical therapy. Significant time is dedicated to restoring proper breathing patterns to enhance pelvic floor muscle coordination and function. Manual techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, massage, and myofascial release are often employed to improve soft tissue extensibility. Biofeedback is utilized when appropriate to help patients become more aware of their pelvic floor muscles. Instruction on vaginal trainers, such as dilators and wands, is also provided to assist patients in increasing their pelvic floor muscle length and elasticity. A significant portion of the treatment plan is devoted to creating a comprehensive home exercise program, not only to address the patient's current condition but also to help prevent the recurrence of symptoms and promote overall wellness.

Conditions such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and the menopause transition can significantly affect women's health. Through pelvic health therapy, individuals can find relief during post prostatectomy recovery, address low back pain and pelvic pain, and manage issues like fecal incontinence and constipation. Additionally, women's health therapy plays a crucial role in post partum recovery, diastasis recti, pubic symphysis dysfunction, and effective perineal and c-section scar management.
